Christianity Might Be Hollywood’s Secret Weapon

The secret is out…

You can make A LOT of money with Christianity.

And Hollywood has figured it out.

Heaven is for Real made $22.5 million in it’s first weekend.  Noah has made over $300 million at the box office.  The Passion of Christ raked in over $600 million.

And it’s no secret that God’s Not Dead and Son Of God were huge hits as well.

Needless to say, if you make a movie about Christianity – people will show up in droves.

To be honest, that’s a great thing.  As Christians, we should celebrate that we in a country where people will pay to see a movie that is “Christian” themed.

But there’s one problem…

As Hollywood continues to learn there’s money to be made, the effort to stay Biblically accurate may go out the window.

In fact, we’ve already seen it with Heaven is for Real – and definitely Noah.

Don’t get confused with what I’m saying.

This isn’t about money.  I’m not here to rip these movies because they made a killing.

I’m the ultimate capitalist and don’t see anything wrong with making a great movie – especially one that people will pay to watch.

But I don’t think it should be at the expense of Biblical accuracy.

The Bible has some ridiculously crazy stories, it doesn’t need anything added.

Unfortunately, Hollywood producers don’t really care about my opinion.

That’s why as Christians, we need to stay alert and look at each movie from a Biblical point-of-view.

We need to be able to distinguish between what is biblically accurate and what Hollywood added.

Do the research before and after watching the movie – that’s what I try to do.

And that’s what the Bible says…

“See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.”  -Colossians 2:8
